Trusting in God's Provision

07-14-2024Weekly ReflectionFr. Augustine Acheme, VC

This Sunday’s readings highlight the call to mission and the unwavering trust in God’s provision. Through the examples of Amos, Paul, and the Apostles, we see a powerful message: when God calls, He also provides.

In the First Reading, we meet Amos, a humble shepherd, who is called by God to prophesy to Israel. Despite being dismissed by Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, Amos stands firm, saying, “The LORD took me from following the flock and said to me, ‘Go prophesy to my people Israel’ “(Amos 7:15). Amos’s story reminds us that God often chooses the unlikely and equips them with His message, emphasizing that our backgrounds do not limit God’s call.

The Second Reading from Ephesians elaborates on the spiritual blessings bestowed upon us in Christ. Paul tells us that we have been chosen and blessed “with every spiritual blessing in the heavens” (Eph 1:3). This passage underscores the abundant grace and purpose God has for each of us. It reassures us that we are not only called but also provided with all we need to fulfill our divine missions. In Christ, we find redemption, forgiveness, and the richness of grace, which empower us to live out our calling.

In the Gospel, Jesus sends out the Twelve, instructing them to take nothing for the journey except a walking stick, no food, no sack, no money. They are to rely entirely on God’s provision and the hospitality of others. Jesus says, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave” (Mk 6:10). This directive to travel light and depend on God and the community teaches us about faith and trust in divine provision. The Apostles’ mission, marked by simplicity and reliance on God, results in driving out demons and healing the sick, demonstrating the power that accompanies those sent by Christ.

These readings invite us to reflect on our own lives and missions. We are all called by God, often in ways that may seem daunting or beyond our abilities. Yet, just as He did with Amos, Paul, and the Apostles, God equips us with what we need. Our task is to trust in His provision and step out in faith.

This week, let us embrace our calling with the assurance that God’s grace is sufficient. Whether we feel like humble shepherds, blessed yet challenged believers, or apostles sent on a mission, we can trust that God’s provision accompanies His call. Let us go forth with confidence, knowing that God, who calls us, also empowers and sustains us in our journey. Amen.
