Christ the King: Ruler of Hearts and Nations

11-24-2024Weekly ReflectionFr. Augustine Acheme, VC

This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, reflecting on His eternal kingship and the truth that His reign brings to the world. In the readings, we are reminded that Christ’s kingdom is unlike any earthly power- it is a reign of truth, justice, and everlasting love.

In the first reading from Daniel, we witness a vision of the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, receiving dominion and kingship: “His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away” (Dn 7:14). This prophetic vision reveals that Jesus is the one to whom all authority belongs, and His reign extends over every nation and people.

The responsorial psalm celebrates the majesty of God’s kingship: “The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty” (Ps 93:1). It reflects the stability and trustworthiness of God’s rule, assuring us that His kingdom will never be shaken. His decrees are firm, and His holiness reigns for all time.

In the second reading from Revelation, Christ is proclaimed as the “faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and ruler of the kings of the earth” (Rv 1:5). Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has freed us from sin and made us part of His kingdom, calling us to serve as priests in God’s name. The reading reminds us that He is the Alpha and the Omega, the one who was, who is, and who is to come- the eternal King of all creation.

In the Gospel, Jesus faces Pilate, who asks if He is the King of the Jews. Jesus responds that His kingdom is not of this world: “For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth” (Jn 18:37). Jesus reveals that His kingship is rooted in truth and calls all who belong to the truth to listen to His voice. His reign is not about worldly power but about bringing God’s truth and justice to the hearts of those who follow Him.

This week, let us reflect on how we recognize Christ’s kingship in our lives. Do we listen to His voice and allow His truth to shape our hearts and actions? As we celebrate this feast, may we renew our commitment to live as members of His kingdom- proclaiming His truth through lives of love, service, and justice.

Christ’s kingdom is already among us, and His reign endures forever. Let us joyfully declare, “The Lord is king; He is robed in majesty!” and open our hearts to His eternal truth. Amen.
