This Sunday’s readings invite us to reflect on what we truly value in life. The pursuit of wisdom, the power of God’s Word, and the challenge of letting go of material possessions for the sake of the kingdom are at the heart of the message.
In the first reading, we hear of the beauty of wisdom: “I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne” (Wis 7:7-8). Wisdom is more valuable than riches, power, or even physical beauty because it leads to true understanding and fulfillment. It reminds us that the treasures of this world pale in comparison to the gift of divine wisdom.
The responsorial psalm echoes this, asking God to “fill us with your love” and make our lives fruitful. The psalmist prays for the wisdom to live our days rightly, knowing that only God’s love can bring las ng joy and purpose.
The second reading from Hebrews speaks of the Word of God as “living and effective,” penetrating deeply into our hearts and minds. It is a reminder that God sees us completely and calls us to live in alignment with His truth. The Word of God is not passive but active, challenging us to examine our priori es and make decisions that reflect our faith.
In the Gospel, Jesus challenges a rich man to sell all he has and follow Him. The man’s sadness at this request shows the grip material wealth can have on our hearts. Jesus then explains how difficult it is for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of God, not because wealth is inherently evil, but because attachment to it can prevent us from fully embracing God’s call. Yet, Jesus assures us that “all things are possible for God” (Mk 10:27).
This week, let us reflect on what holds our hearts. Are we seeking wisdom and living according to God’s Word, or are we clinging to material possessions and comforts? True wealth lies in following Christ and embracing the treasures of His kingdom. Amen.
