God is Always Present

08-08-2020Weekly ReflectionFr. James Aboyi

Dear Friends,

Several images are used in the first reading and Gospel today to describe how God can appear to people in need in unexpected ways under the least expected circumstances. God is always present, even in places we may not think to experience him. It takes faith and persistent prayers to discover his divine, hidden, presence. In our first reading, when God appeared to Prophet Elijah, he did not reveal himself out of thunder, lighting, fire or earthquake as expected. Rather, God appeared in a gentle breeze. Through all of the chaotic signs, Elijah remained patient and faithful, waiting for the Lord. His patience and persistent prayer pays off . After the fire, there was a tiny whispering sound and the Lord passed by.

We see a similar event in the Gospel. The disciples were being tossed about in the storm, helpless and afraid of losing their lives. They did not expect Jesus to appear to them but yet, Jesus came to them through the storm, walking on the water. At his command, the sea calmed and peace overcame them.

Like the disciples, we too are experiencing the storm of this global pandemic that has caused a deep disruption in our lives. In the midst of our ‘storm’ we now have other storms from increasing violence and discord in the country. Many of us are afraid right now for many reasons: fear from disrupted plans, fear of an uncertain future, fear that our country will continue to divide itself even further. At this point, we must call on the Lord like Peter, “Lord save us, we are perishing.”

We take consolation from the Gospel story today. When Jesus appeared to his disciples, amidst the chaos, he brought peace. Where God is, there is peace. My prayer today is that God may hear our prayers as we call on him day and night. May he walk on the water through the midst of the storms in our lives to save us and restore peace to the world.

Thank you and remain blessed,

Fr. James
