Making the Right Decision in Life

07-26-2020Weekly ReflectionFr. James Aboyi, V.C.

Imagine! If you were to have a vision, and God or an angel appeared to you and asked you to make a request for just one thing in life. What would you ask for? Would you ask for health, protection, wealth and prosperity? In our first reading today, Solomon was given such a rare opportunity to ask God for one thing in life. As a young king, Solomon had many legitimate needs. He needed wealth, military might, fame, security, prosperity, long life and happiness. But when God asked him to ask for one thing, he asked for wisdom from God to make right decisions in life. He knew that with God’s wisdom comes every other good thing he needed and desired.

In the Gospel reading today, Jesus used some parables to illustrate how one who finds the kingdom of God finds everything desirable besides it. He compared it to someone discovering a hidden treasure in a field and then burying it, and a merchant finding a pearl of great price; both then sell everything they have owned in order to buy what they discovered. In reality, these parables invite us not only to seek first the kingdom of God but to seek only the kingdom of God. With the kingdom of God comes all other good things we desire and long for in life. A good Bible quotation we can use for personal meditation, along with the scripture readings today, is Matthew 6:33 where Jesus says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all other things shall be added to us.”

Thank you and remain blessed,
Fr. James
